Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan, has experienced a flurry of earthquake tremors in recent weeks, causing concern among residents. While no major damage or casualties have been reported, the events serve as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity.

The most recent earthquake struck on Thursday, jolting Peshawar and surrounding areas like Kohat, Battagram, Mohmand, Swat, and Charsadda. The National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) measured the quake at a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale, with an epicenter located 237 km west of Chitral and a depth of 190 km.

This follows a series of smaller tremors felt earlier this month, including a 4.9 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday afternoon. These tremors, originating from the Hindu Kush mountain range in neighboring Afghanistan, sent residents rushing out of their homes and workplaces in a state of panic.

Despite the recent activity, Peshawar has not experienced a truly devastating earthquake in recent memory. However, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, centered about 90 km northeast of Islamabad, serves as a stark reminder of the destructive potential of earthquakes in the region. That 7.6 magnitude quake caused widespread damage and casualties across Pakistan, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Following the recent tremors, local authorities and emergency services have been placed on high alert. Experts urge residents to stay informed through official channels and to be prepared for future seismic events. Here are some recommended safety measures:

  • Develop a family earthquake plan: Discuss escape routes and meeting locations with your family.
  • Practice drop, cover, and hold: This life-saving maneuver teaches you how to protect yourself during an earthquake.
  • Earthquake-proof your home: Secure heavy furniture and shelves to walls to prevent them from toppling over.
  • Assemble an emergency kit: Include essentials like water, non-perishable food, a first-aid kit, and sanitation supplies.

While the recent tremors in Peshawar caused temporary anxiety, they also provided a valuable opportunity to revisit earthquake preparedness. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, residents can be better prepared to face future seismic events.
